Newton Police Officer Indicted On Murder Charge

Newton Police Officer 28-year-old Carlos Alverto Uribe of Conover was arrested Monday (July 21) by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). He’s charged with second-degree murder.

The SBI was requested by the Newton Police Department to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred on June 26, 2025. On that date, officers with the Newton Police Department initiated a traffic stop on a motorcycle for multiple violations. The driver failed to stop, resulting in a pursuit that concluded in Conover with a collision between the motorcycle and a patrol vehicle. During a subsequent altercation, an officer discharged their firearm, fatally wounding the driver. The deceased is 21-year-old Camden Skyler Childers of Stanley, North Carolina.

The Newton Police Department immediately requested the SBI conduct an independent investigation. Following that probe, the SBI disseminated its findings to the Catawba County District Attorney for review. As a result, a true bill of indictment was returned Monday for Newton Police Lieutenant Carlos Alverto Uribe. In accordance with departmental policy, he remains on administrative leave without pay. The Newton Police Department’s internal administrative investigation into the incident is continuing.
He was incarcerated in the Catawba County Detention Facility without bond. A Superior Court date was scheduled Tuesday (January 22).
