Newton Man Charged With Shooting At Police

Newton Police have obtained eight felony warrants for 24-year-old Keon Jemez Leach of Newton. He is charged with four felony counts each of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm.

Leach is alleged to have fired at Police and was shot when Officers returned fire after a 911 hang-up call at the Catawba Pines Apartments on East 1st Street in Newton. The incident occurred at about 11:40 Monday night.

Leach is currently being treated at a regional medical facility where he is listed in stable condition. No Officers were injured during the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.

Two Newton Police Officers and a Catawba County Deputy are on administrative leave. No confirmation on how many Officers returned fire.
