Newton-Conover 42 Alexander Central 21
Taylorsville: For new Alexander Central coach Chris Marshall, the wins will come but not yet.
The Cougars took a 14-0 lead with 9:26 remaining in the second-quarter when QB Jacob Hubbard hit WR Jaheim Redmond from 29 yards. Everything changed and rapidly !
The visiting Red Devils would reel-off 28 unanswered points to take a 28-14 lead by halftime.
Newton-Conover RB Jeremiah Pope scored three times in succession on runs of 21,5 and 19 yards. The Cougars would fail to cover a kick-off giving the Red Devils prime field position and failed to recover an onside kick to fuel the rally for the Catawba County visitors.
AC would get within 28-21 early in the third period when Jacob Hubbard scored from a yard. That’s was it for the Cougar offense. Not all for the Red Lucifers.
QB Camden Ezzard and Pope again would add touchdowns to send the Alexander Central fans home stunned.
Pope had 4 touchdowns, rushed for 164 yards and frustrated ACHS would-be, and in some cases, should-be tacklers. Ezzard was slithery as well breaking tackles and making others miss for 108 yards.
Newton-Conover out-gained the Cougars 391 to 202.
Kaleb Genwright led the AC defense with 8 tackles including 2 tackles for loss. Cole Pennell had 7 stops with 3.5 tackles for loss.
Newton-Conover stays on the road next week at Polk County while the Blue and Gold head to Hickory.
