At their meeting Monday evening (June 16), the Newton-Conover Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution opposing a proposed merger with the Catawba County Schools. As previously reported, Catawba County officials are reportedly considering a forcible merger of the two school systems.
According to a news release from the Newton-Conover City Schools, on Friday, June 6, 2025, Newton-Conover City Schools (N-CCS) was informed by Catawba County Board of Commissioners Chairman Randy Isenhower that the County Commissioners plan to consider a resolution at their July meeting to begin the process of forcibly merging N-CCS into Catawba County Schools.
Chairman Isenhower has indicated that the Board of Commissioners have the votes to pass this resolution. In response, the Newton-Conover Board of Education considered their resolution at Monday’s meeting.
After hearing from several community members who opposed the merger, the board discussed the issue and expressed their opposition. Just under two hours into the session, the resolution was approved.
