Lenoir – On Sunday, June 16, at approximately 9:20 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision in Caldwell County on Playmore Beach Road near US 64. A 2003 BMW motorcycle was traveling north on Playmore Beach Road when the driver drove off the right side of the road and struck a tree and a fence.
The driver, Cody Allen Word, 28, of Morganton, was ejected from the motorcycle and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The initial investigation does not indicate excessive speed or impairment to be contributing factors in the collision. During the on-scene investigation, the roadway was closed in the area for approximately two hours.
