Morganton Man Charged With Discharging Weapon Into Occupied Property

20-year-old Michael Keith Barber of Morganton was arrested Saturday, April 20th by Morganton Public Safety Officers. He’s charged with felony discharge a weapon into occupied property along with misdemeanor counts of injury to personal property and injury to real property.

Officers responded to an apartment on Michaels Street to investigate the report of what sounded like a gunshot. Upon arrival, officers made contact with Michael Barber who told them his gun went off by accident. Police found the bullet inside the adjacent apartment which was occupied at the time.

Barber was transported to the Burke County Jail and charged with the previously listed offenses. Officers retrieved two firearms from the apartment. There were no injuries in the incident.

He was not listed as an inmate in Burke County. A first appearance in court was scheduled Monday.
