Moree Files For State House

December 14, 2023 By Richard C. Gilbert

Steve Moree

WILKESBORO – Steve Moree, a current resident of Wilkesboro and graduate of Alexander Central High School, filed his candidacy for the North Carolina House of Representatives District 94 seat on Thursday morning at the Wilkes Board of Elections.

Moree served as a coach, teacher and administrator in the Wilkes and Alexander County public school systems for more than 34 years before retiring from full-time work in 2011. Since that time, he has continued to work with teachers and administrators through trainings and as a student-teacher advisor for Appalachian State and Gardner-Webb Universities.

The decision to run for public office for Moree was inspired by the lack of support for public education and its teachers and administrators from Raleigh. After consideration, prayer and conversations with family and friends, Moree announced his intention to run for the NC House of representatives. Today, that intention became a reality as he signed the paperwork and paid the filing fees.

Moree strongly believes that teacher pay is incentivizing new teachers but fails miserably at retaining them, hurting our students’ growth and development. He believes that private school vouchers are a waste of taxpayer dollars and are misguided investments. He believes that teachers are forced to focus on results of too much standardized testing instead of educating children and preparing them for the work-force or college.

He strongly believes in the people of Wilkes and Alexander County and wants to ensure that the future remains bright through protecting the students and the educators that serve them.
