A minor earthquake was recorded in Ashe County on Saturday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The 2.2-magnitude quake struck at 1:25 p.m., centered approximately 10 miles east of Jefferson in Ashe County and 26 miles northeast of Boone. The earthquake had a depth of about 2.5 miles.
The USGS preliminary report indicates the temblor was also located approximately 38 miles west of Mount Airy and 38 miles north-northeast of Lenoir.
Earthquakes of this magnitude are typically not widely felt and rarely cause damage. The USGS classifies quakes below magnitude 2.5 as generally not felt except by very few people under especially favorable conditions.
