MORGANTON, N.C. — Burke County Public Health has confirmed the county’s first case of measles and is notifying the public of potential exposure locations and times in recent days.
Public Health officials are urging anyone who was at these locations during the specified times to monitor for symptoms of measles, which include fever, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes, and a rash that typically starts on the face and spreads over the body.
If you believe you were exposed or are experiencing symptoms:
– Stay home to avoid spreading illness if you develop symptoms.
– Contact Burke County Public Health at (828) 764-9150 or your primary care physician for guidance on next steps, including possible post-exposure options such as vaccination or immune globulin for high-risk individuals.
Measles is highly contagious and can spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
