Man Shot And Killed After Overnight Chase With Newton Police

June 27, 2025 By Richard C. Gilbert

A man was shot and killed by a Newton Police Officer after a chase that started in Newton and ended in a crash in Conover overnight.

At about 11:56 pm, a Newton Officer attempted to stop a motorcycle in the 700 block of U.S. Highway 70 for failure to display a registration plate, speeding and reckless driving. The motorcycle was driven by Camden Skyler Childers, 21, of Stanley, North Carolina, Newton police said in a news release on Friday.

Police say Childers failed to stop and continued to “flee at a high rate of speed” toward Conover. The chase ended on Northern Drive NW in Conover after the motorcycle collided with a patrol vehicle.
The police department said “a brief physical altercation” happened after the crash. Childers was shot by an Officer.

Childers was transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

A statement from Newton Police says, “The Officer who discharged their weapon has been placed on administrative leave, in accordance with departmental policy, pending the outcome of an internal investigation and a separate investigation being conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

The name of the Officer has not been released.
