Man Charged With Murder On Charlotte Light Rail Now Being Held In Catawba County

December 12, 2025 By Richard C. Gilbert

Decarlos Dejuan Brown Jr

The man accused of fatally stabbing a Ukrainian woman on the Charlotte light rail in August has been placed in Catawba County custody. 35-year-old Decarlos Dejuan Brown Jr had a federal court date scheduled on Thursday. He was indicted by a grand jury in October on charges of violence against a railroad carrier and mass transportation system resulting in death. Brown is accused of stabbing 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska on a Charlotte light rail at the end of August.

The case garnered national attention and led to changes in North Carolina’s criminal justice system, including the passing of Iryna’s Law. Brown has a criminal history dating back to 2007. He was incarcerated in the Catawba County Detention Facility on Thursday. Multiple federal inmates are housed in that facility due to a contract with the US Marshals Service.
