Alexander Central 8 South Caldwell 7…9 innings
Hudson: Two of the North Carolina’s elite softball programs did battle Tuesday night and the visitors from Taylorsville won in dramatic fashion.
Alexander Central led 5-1 after two innings to see the Spartans score a run in the third and five more in the fourth. The game was tied at 7 until inning 9 when with two out, AC’s freshman catcher Lyla Mayberry squeezed home what turned out to be the game-winner. South couldn’t answer in the home-half of the 9th and the team wearing Blue and Gold got the pleasure of celebrating on the field of the team who was ranked #1 in the state at the beginning of the night.
Kyla Hamby went 3 for 3 with 3 rbi including a homer for ACHS. Jenna Mason hit a solo-shot for AC as well. Macy Law went the final 5.1 innings allowing only a run on 5 hits to earn the victory.
South’s Syndee Bumgarner and McKenna Yount both had 3 hits for the Lady Spartans who drop to 11-1. The wins improves Alexander Central to 10-1 and 3-0 in Northwestern Conference play.
Celebrate tonight, the Lady Cougars will, but the two titans have at least one more regular season war scheduled for later in the season and that one will be played in Taylorsville. Nobody would be surprised to see the two play for the title in the league tournament and who knows, maybe again in the State 4A Playoffs.
