Mooresville – On Sunday, January 21, at approximately 4:20 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision in Iredell County on I-77 North near mile marker 39. A 2020 Nissan Sentra was traveling north in the emergency lane on I-77, failed to adequately reduce speed, and collided with a 2014 Freightliner tractor-trailer that was stopped in the emergency lane.
The driver of the Sentra, Allante Nathaniel Watts, 28, of Gastonia, NC, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, Ramon Ledesma Verdecia-Viltres, 55, of Naples, FL, was not injured.
The initial investigation does not indicate impairment to be a contributing factor. During the on-scene investigation, I-77 was closed in the area for approximately 3 hours. No charges will filed in this case.
