According to a press release from the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office
On Tuesday, June 17, Deputies with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office responded to a welfare check at 210 Shaw Road in Harmony. The Sheriff’s Office had received a report alleging that eight children, ranging in age from 2 months to 16 years, were being neglected by their parents and living in extremely unsanitary conditions.
When Deputies arrived, they discovered all eight children inside the home, which was infested with insects and rodents. Officers also observed large amounts of trash and feces throughout the residence. The Iredell County Department of Social Services was alerted.
The Special Victims Unit was assigned to investigate. During the investigation. It was determined that the children’s parents, Gregory and Chelsie Smith, had knowingly allowed the children to live in these unsafe conditions. Deputies also found two dogs inside the home that were not being properly cared for. Iredell County Animal Control responded and took possession of the animals.
As a result of the investigation, arrest warrants for both Gregory and Chelsie Smith. Each parent was charged with seven counts of felony child abuse, eight counts of misdemeanor child abuse, and two counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty.
Gregory and Chelsie Smith were located and arrested on Saturday, June 21, and transported to the Iredell County Detention Center. They both are charged with eight counts of felony child abuse, eight counts of misdemeanor child abuse, and two counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty.

The Iredell County Department of Social Services is continuing its investigation. The children have been placed in the custody of other family members and are currently safe.
