Statesville – On Thursday, March 6, at approximately 4:50 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision in Iredell County on Old Mocksville Road at Jane Sowers Road. A 2000 Saturn passenger car traveling east on Jane Sowers Road, attempted to turn left from a stop sign onto Old Mocksville Road and turned in front of a southbound 2011 Ford F-150.
The driver of the Saturn, Sonia Guadalupe Cesar Ponce, 50, of Statesville, succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
The driver of the Ford, Jaxson Carroll Halsey, 16, of Statesville, was transported by EMS to an area hospital with minor injuries.
The initial investigation does not indicate impairment or speed to be contributing factors and no charges have been filed in the case at this time. During the on-scene investigation, the roadway was closed in the area for approximately two hours.
