Home Intruder Shot And Killed By Homeowner In Burke County

An alleged home intruder was shot and killed early Friday in Burke County.

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office responded to 2902 Flat Gap Road in Valdese after a report of shots fired around 3 am.

37-year old Howard Gene Cook was located at the scene deceased of an apparent gunshot wound. Investigators say Cook had broken into the residence. He found a gun in the home according to a news release. The homeowner was armed as well and fired a shot that struck Cook.

The investigation is ongoing.
