WILKESBORO – A N.C. Department of Transportation contractor will shift traffic on U.S. 421 in Wilkes County to facilitate future phases of an intersection improvement project.
Traffic will shift slightly north on U.S. 421 between Winkler Mill Road and Addison Avenue beginning Monday, March 30, weather permitting. Crews also will close one of the two existing left-turn lanes from U.S. 421 North to Winkler Mill Road Extension.
The shift will allow crews from Branch Civil Inc. access to the median to finish paving work and build a concrete island needed for the final alignment.
This traffic shift is part of an $81 million project to convert a 2-mile stretch of intersections along U.S. 421 in Wilkesboro to reduced conflict intersections.
Reduced conflict intersections simplify how traffic moves and reduced total crashes by 50%, according to NCDOT crash data. They have reduced frontal impact crashes, like head-on or T-bone collisions, by 80%. Construction for the entire project is scheduled to finish in fall 2027.
