Fire claimed a building on Whitson Lane off Highway 127 on Wednesday.
Bethehem, Ellendale, Wittenburg and Hiddenite units responded to the blaze that started as a grass fire. The first firefighters responded at 2:48 pm.
David Huffman the Alexander County Ranger with the North Carolina Forest Service said the fire started as the result of an “escaped debris burn.” The structure contained some antiques and artifacts.
Huffman issued the following statement
“ The past two weeks Alexander County has had a lot of small grass and woods fires. Most range from 1/10 acre to 1/2 acre but we have experienced as large as 3 acres. They are effecting most every fire district in Alexander county. Some have been caused by wind and power lines being downed by trees falling in the high wind events we have had. But most are the result of careless debris burning.”
