One person is dead as the result of an accident this morning in Alexander County.
Shortly after 5am, a pickup truck ran off Willie McLeod Road in the Ellendale Community. The truck struck a tree. One person has been confirmed as deceased at the scene. Willie McLeod Road was closed until around 8:30 as the North Carolina Highway Patrol investigated the crash. We will provide more details as they become available.
UPDATE:
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the victim is identified as 44-year-old Travis Lamont Bennett of Stony Point. He was the driver and lone occupant of the rented pickup. There were no signs of impairment and Bennett was not wearing a seatbelt. The fog was quite heavy at the time of the accident.
