A man died in a crash Wednesday afternoon in Iredell County.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded at approximately 2:20 p.m.to I-40 West between the 156 and 155 mile markers. Westbound traffic had come to a stop due to a brush fire beside the interstate. A 2003 Lexus passenger vehicle was stopped in the right lane.
A 2001 Peterbilt tractor-trailer swerved in an attempt to avoid the stopped traffic but collided with the Lexus. The Peterbilt then also collided with a Chevrolet pickup truck. The Chevrolet was pushed into a 2013 Kenworth tractor trailer. The driver of the Lexus, 65-year-old Ward Beecher Miller, of Winston-Salem, died at the scene. A passenger in the Lexus and the driver of the Chevrolet were transported to the hospital by EMS. Their conditions were not available. The Peterbilt was being driven by a 51-year-old Pennsylvania man.
I-40 West was closed and traffic was detoured onto US 64 at Exit 162; all lanes were reopened by 6:30 p.m. The investigation is ongoing.
