Alexander Central 5
Concord Cox Mill 1
Alexander Central advanced to Round IV of the State 3A Baseball Playoffs with a win over Cox Mill Tuesday night in Taylorsville.
Cougar junior left hander Bryson Hammer got the win but it was not a vintage game for the Clemson commit. Hammer struggled finding the strike zone walking 8 batters in his 5.2 innings of work although he allowed only one hit. He struck out 10 and gave way to senior Dawson Elder who got the final 4 outs of the game without allowing a base runner and fanning three .
Alexander Central took a 1-0 in the third inning on a hit off the bat of third baseman Bryon Younts. The visitors from Concord drew even in the fifth as Hammer walked a pair of batters setting up the run.
The game was won in the fifth inning. Byron Younts delivered his second run scoring single to give AC a 2-1 lead. Cougar senior first baseman Seth Sigmon followed Younts and deposited a pitch over the wall in right center for a two-run homer. The blast sent the big crowd at Bob Gryder Stadium into a frenzy and sent the Cougars to the Western Region Semi-Final.
Coach Pete Hardee’s Cougars have won 12 in a row and stand at 24-7. Next up, another home game in Round IV. Marvin Ridge knocked off the top seeded Crest Chargers 5-2 and will visit Taylorsville. The Game will be played Friday night at 7pm.
