Marvin Ridge 8
Alexander Central 1
Someone once said “Base on balls will kill you.” Whomever first said it was right then and they’re still on the money today. Alexander Central saw their winning streak snapped and their dream of a State Championship come crashing down Friday night in Taylorsville.
The Cougars trailed 1-0 after four innings as Dawson Elder had struggled with his control which is not typical of the senior. He battled but ran into trouble in the fifth after retiring a batter and issuing a walk, his 4th in 4.1 innings of work. Coach Pete Hardee called on junior lefty Maddux Kerley and the plate was jumping on him as well. Kerley walked three batters and had two wild pitches while retiring only one batter. By the time the fifth frame was over, the visitors from Union County had scored 7 times and the big crowd at Bob Gryder Stadium knew this was not to be the Cougar’s night. Sophomore Jeremy Simpson came in and finished the game but the season was over for the Blue and Gold.
With the loss Alexander Central sees a 12 game winning streak end and finish a terrific season at 23-8.
