Taylorsville: Coming off a horrible shooting night Tuesday at McDowell, Alexander Central’s Lady Cougars found the range Friday in a win over Watauga. AC shot 50 percent on the night and hit 15 of 29 three-pointers led by Ava Head who hit 8 of 12 from distance and finished with 26 points. Meredith Wike had 23 and Malayah Adams 14. Wike collected 18 rebounds and 10 assists for a triple-double as the Lady Cougars improved to 14-2 overall and 2-1 in Northwestern Conference play. Izzy Mohr led the Lady Pioneers with 17. Watauga falls to 8-8 and 2-1.

The Cougars won a tense back and forth battle by taking control in the final quarter, outscoring the visitors from Boone 23-11. AC had 4 players score in double figures led by Noah VanBeurden’s 19. Jaheim Redmond added 15, Koa Mikeal 12 and Kade Flowers had 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Cade Keller led the Pioneers (8-6, 0-3) with 25. The Blue and Gold are 3-0 in league play and 11-5 overall.
