Alexander Central’s Baseball team doesn’t think the number 13 is unlucky. They’re hoping pick up their 13th straight win tonight when they host Marvin Ridge in a 3A Western Regional Semi-Final game in Taylorsville.
Coach Pete Hardee’s Cougars are 23-7 going into the game at Bob Gryder Stadium. Marvin Ridge of Waxhaw comes in at 23-5 including a win over West #2 seed Crest on Tuesday.
The Cougars haven’t tasted defeat since they lost 2-0 at McDowell on April 10th. They cruised through the Catawba Valley Easter Baseball Classic Tournament and won the Northwestern Conference Tournament capping it with a win over regular season champion South Caldwell. The Blue and Gold are a team that leans on a pitching rotation of Junior Bryson Hammer, Junior Maddox Kerley and Senior Dawson Elder. The trio is a combined 21-4. Elder has been working out of the bullpen in the playoffs but Coach Hardee confirmed this morning the Western Carolina commit will get the start tonight putting Kerley as the first man from the pen if needed.
Marvin Ridge High School opened in Union County in 2007. Don’t let the fact that the school is not yet twenty-years-old fool you. The Mavericks have built a program that already has won two state baseball championships, coming back to back in 2015 and 2016.
Game time is 7pm
