Child Dies Days After Crash In Catawba County

October 31, 2025 By Richard C. Gilbert

CATAWBA COUNTY — An infant has died days after a crash.

The crash happened on Settlemyre Bridge Road near White Oak Drive in Catawba County around 9:10 pm on Saturday.

Christopher Houser, age 40 of Newton, was driving a Nissan Altima east on Settlemyre Bridge Road when his vehicle crossed the westbound lane and struck an Infiniti Q50. Houser, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.

The driver of the Infiniti, Isrrael Suarez-Harnandez, 22, sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to an area hospital. An adult passenger and two children in the vehicle were also hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, troopers said. One of the children died on Wednesday.

Investigators said impairment and speed appear to have contributed to the crash.
