Burke County Man Challenges Deputies To Gunfight But Thinks Better Of It

On March 18, Burke County Sheriff’s Office deputies went to a residence located at 7509 Shady Oak Road in Connelly Springs to serve a Writ of Possession. Deputies attempted to enter the residence with the new homeowner but were confronted by 49-year-old Tyler Murray Bouthillier. He spoke to the Deputies through a crack in the sliding glass door. Bouthillier stated, “the only way I’m leaving this house today is dead. I guess we’ll have a gun fight when you come back,” and displayed a firearm.

Due to concerns for Officer safety, the safety of the suspect and the surrounding community, Deputies left the residence.

On March 27, 2026, Deputies returned to the residence and took Bouthillier into custody. He was transported to the Burke County Magistrate’s Office and served with the outstanding warrant for arrest. Bouthillier was issued no bond, and his first court appearance was March 30th in Morganton.

He appeared in court for his first appearance and the Judge upheld the no bond and set his next court date for April 20, 2026.
