
Randy Darryl Shumake
In Alexander County Superior Court on Monday, Randy Darryl Shumake pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of Jerry Vinson Hayes in 2018. Alexander County Deputies found the body of Hayes after he had been beaten and shot according to previous reports. Hayes body was located in a wooded area off Robinette Road in the Little River Community on Thursday, August 9th, 2018.
Shumake was charged with the murder the next day by the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators were able to track Shumake’s movements around the time of the murder from a tracking device he was required to wear after serving a lengthy sentence for a second-degree rape conviction.
In August of 2023, Shumake and his son, 35-year old Cody Lynn Shumake of Taylorsville, were charged with 18 counts of felony statutory sexual offense with a 15 year-old or younger. Those charges date back to 2018.
Shumake has been held in the Alexander County Detention Center since his arrest.
