On Wednesday, April 10, at approximately 9:00 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision in Lincoln County on NC 182 near Sorrells Baxter Road. A 2016 Jeep Cherokee was traveling east on NC 182 and struck a bicyclist who was riding eastbound in the roadway. The bicyclist was not wearing any reflective clothing, the roadway was not lighted, and no lights were on the bicycle.
The bicyclist, Timothy Mark Eaker, 59, of Cherryville, NC, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The driver of the Jeep, Kay Justice Cooke, 59, of Lawndale, was not injured.
The initial investigation does not indicate impairment or speed to be contributing factors. During the on-scene investigation, the roadway was closed in the area for several hours. No charges are expected to be filed in this case.
