Another Arrest Made In Burke County Child Death Investigation

Another arrest has been made in connection to the death of a young child in Burke County last November. 19-year-old Gracie Kay Cook of Walker Road in Morganton is charged with second-degree murder without regard and probation violation. According to published reports, the arrest is in connection to the death of a child last November.

On May 22, on November 7, 2025, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office responded to NC 18-US 64 in Morganton, in reference to a cardiac arrest. Upon arrival, deputies found a deceased 14-month-old male. The Criminal Investigations Division responded to the scene and initiated an investigation.

Following an approximately six-month investigation, warrants were issued for Samuel James Hensley on charges of second-degree murder. Hensley was arrested without incident May 21.

Cook was placed in the Burke County Jail under no bond.
