The Alexander County Sheriff’s Office would like to warn citizens about a scam that has been reported multiple times over the past several days.
Scammers are calling citizens pretending to be representatives from Spectrum. They claim they can lower the bill by ordering new phones. During this call, they request access to your account or they have the victim make changes to their account. Once they have access, the scammers are ordering phones under the victims account regardless if the victim agreed to receive them. These phones are charged to the victims Spectrum account.
When the phones arrive, the victim will then e-mail who they think is the Spectrum Representative that they do not want the phones. The scammer then provides a return address to ship it back to Spectrum. However, the phones are not being shipped back to Spectrum, they are being shipped to New York.
The scammers sound professional and may seem like they are legitimate. One of the e-mail addresses that is being associated with this scam is: myaccount@spectrumemails.com.
Protect Yourself:
🛑 Do not provide account information or passwords to anyone who calls you unexpectedly. Spectrum will not ask to gain access to your account.
🛑 If you receive a call claiming to be from Spectrum, hang up and contact Spectrum directly using the phone number listed on your bill or the company’s official website.
🛑 Be cautious of unsolicited offers that seem too good to be true.
🛑 If you receive merchandise you did not order, do not use a return label provided by someone who contacted you unexpectedly. Verify the situation directly with the company first.
