Sheriff Chris Bowman and the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office would like to inform the citizens of an ongoing scam. Many Citizens are reporting that their information is being used to fraudulently apply for unemployment benefits.
The root of this scam is identity theft. If you receive a notification that you have applied for unemployment and you did not , you may be a victim of Identity theft. Please follow the following steps to begin protecting yourself.
File a report with The Division of Employment security at www.des.nc.gov/report-unemployment-fraud.

Visit https://www.experian.com/ or either of the other credit bureaus. Review your credit report for any unknown or unrecognized accounts. You can also request a security freeze on your credit for additional protection.
Contact your local Law Enforcement agency to report that you may be a victim of Identity theft.
