Alexander County Sheriff’s Office Asking For Information Into Death of Infant

May 28, 2024 By Richard C. Gilbert

The Alexander County Sheriff’s Office continues to seek information regarding the death of an infant in 2007.

Josue Diaz, age 6 months, died at a regional medical facility on September 11, 2007. The boy had been treated at Davis Hospital in Statesville. The hospital contacted the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office when the boy was treated for injuries that are typical of child abuse.

Now retired Deputy Keith Warren responded to Statesville and investigated the case. He says the child was transferred to a regional facility later that day. Warren says he learned the father of the child was 46-year-old Sergio Mata Hernandez of Taylorsville. Warrants were issued for the arrest of Hernandez at the time. After the death of the child, murder warrants were issued but Hernandez remained at large.

If anyone has any information to the whereabouts of Sergio Mata Hernandez, contact the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office at 828-632-1111 or by calling Crimestoppers of Alexander County at 828-632-8555.
