Wednesday, September 23, shortly after 9:30 p.m., Morganton Public Safety Officers responded to a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Burkemont Avenue and West Fleming Drive.
A black Chevrolet Tahoe was involved in the accident and was driven by 24-year-old Austin James Wilson of Marion. Officers suspected Wilson was impaired at the time of the accident. Before officers could complete their investigation, Wilson fled the scene in the Tahoe.
At approximately 11:15 p.m., officers received a report that the Chevrolet Tahoe had become stuck on the railroad tracks near South College Street. Officers responded to the area and found the vehicle on the railroad tracks between South College Street and Rand Street. Wilson was also found at the scene.
Officers conducted a DWI investigation and determined that Wilson was impaired. Wilson was arrested and charged with Driving While Impaired, Trespassing Railroad Right of Way, Hit and Run Resulting in Property Damage, and Failure to Stop at a Red Light. Wilson received a $2000 secure bond. Wilson is set to appear in court October 26.
