Sylvester Duane Smith, 41, and Robin Love Bouchelle, 26, both of Stoneview Drive in the Rock Creek section of North Wilkesboro, were arrested Wednesday. On Thursday, both were in the Wilkes County Jail with secured bonds of $200,000 apiece.
Smith and Bouchelle found their 3-month-old daughter, Rainbow Smith, unresponsive in her crib on Sept. 19, 2016.
A toxicology study conducted as part of the autopsy determined that cocaine toxicity, which is essentially cocaine overdose, was the cause of death. A state medical examiner involved with the case said that in his opinion the infant could have ingested cocaine only by breastfeeding or if cocaine was mixed with the infant’s formula. Bouchelle and Smith both denied knowing how the child could have ingested cocaine and Bouchelle claims she hadn’t breastfed the infant.
The child lived in the home with her parents and six or seven siblings. Smith and Bouchelle were the sole caregivers. The Wilkes Department of Social Services took custody of the other juveniles in the home after the toxicology results were reported.
