A Wilkes County woman will serve 18 to 22½ years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the shooting death of her husband three years ago. 53 year old Betty Jean Holbrook was sentenced inWilkes Superior Court after she entered the plea.
The Wilkes Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting at the home Holbrook shared with her husband, Matthew Wayne Holbrook, in the Thurmond Community on the night of June 17, 2015, and found her husband shot in the chest. Sheriff Chris Shew said Holbrook, 52, died at the scene
Shew said Mrs. Holbrook’s daughter made the 911 call to the Wilkes Communications Center to report the shooting. In addition to Mrs. Holbrook’s daughter, he said, a young child was in the mobile home when the shooting occurred. No one else was injured.
Holbrook was given credit for 1,061 days served in the Wilkes County Jail.
