Dustin Johnson won the US Open Golf Championship Sunday and he owes his some of it to his athletic heritage. His Grandfather is still remembered as one the greatest athletes in Burke County history.
Johnson considered to be the most talented golfers in the world has been a consistent winner on the PGA Tour but had not claimed a major title (US Open, Masters, PGA, British Open) before Sunday. Johnson was raised in the Myrtle Beach area and attended Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C.
Johnson is known as an athlete and can dunk a basketball and launch a baseball a long way much like crushes drives on the PGA Tour.
He owes some of his athletic ability to his grandfather Art Whisnant. Whisnant was a multi-sport standout in Burke County. He was raised in the Icard, Hidebran, area. Whisnant played basketball at the University of South Carolina and was named All Atlantic Coast Conference 3 times while playing for the Gamecocks in the early 60’s. Whisnant is in the USC Hall of Fame.
