Alexander County seemed to have fared better than our neighbors following a rather bizarre series of thunderstorms early Friday evening. According to County Emergency Management Director Russell Greene numerous homes and other structures had significant damage but no injuries were reported. Catawba County to the south suffered some significant damage as the result of high winds but to the north Wilkes County felt the brunt of the storms as did Caldwell County to the West.
At one point Friday night almost half of Wilkes County was without electricity. Dawn came Saturday and still more than 15,000 customers were without service. By nightfall Saturday over 12,000 customers still had no service. Most should have service restored by 6pm today, Some roadways in Wilkes and Caldwell remained closed Sunday as well.
The National Weather Service has reported no tornadoes in the area but wind gusts in excess of 50 miles per hour were common.
