The Department of Transportation will temporarily close U.S. 21 at Interstate 40 in Statesville to complete adjustments after shifting traffic to a diverging diamond interchange earlier this month.
The closure is necessary for crews to grind out and restripe pavement markings to reflect the final traffic pattern that provides an additional travel lane through the interchange.
The closure will start at 7 p.m. Wednesday, weather permitting. At that time traffic on U.S. 21 will close under the I-40 overpass. During the night, crews will extend the closure on U.S. 21 between Glenway Drive and Carolina Avenue.
Motorists can take U.S. 21 to I-40, continue to the next exit and turn around to return to U.S. 21.
All work should be completed by 6 a.m. Thursday.
A diverging diamond allows two directions of traffic to temporarily cross to the left side of the road and can move large volumes of traffic without increasing the number of lanes and traffic signals.
