The mercury is rising, and that means it’s time to lace up your running shoes and hit the road (or trail). In Alexander County, there are four races planned from now through June. And believe it or not, one of the races will be FREE for many folks.
OUR FEATURED RACE is the RockyFest Trail Race, set for Saturday, April 21 at Rocky Face Mountain Recreational Area in Hiddenite. We mentioned the word “FREE” above, and here’s how it works. If you are a resident of Alexander County or an active or retired county employee, you can run for free. In addition, ALL emergency personnel, military, and teachers can run for free. If you don’t fall into one of these categories, the registration fee is only $25 by April 8 (add $10 thereafter). Registrants will choose a distance of 4.5 miles (one loop), 9.0 miles (two loops), or 13.5 miles (three loops). Online registration is available to those paying; however, those who are registering as a free participant should complete the PDF and submit via mail, email, or in person. Find all the details at www.rockyfacepark.com/rockyfest. Also, make plans to stay for RockyFest 2018, which runs from 10:00 to 4:00, and features live music, food, rock climbing, children’s activities, and much more!
Other races for the first half of 2018 include the Race to the Cove 5K (February 24), Robin’s Run 5K (April 7), and the Vertical Mile Challenge (June 16). Read more below!
These races are all part of the Alexander County Points Challenge, in which runners submit their race results and earn two points per mile for races in Alexander County and one point per mile for out-of-county races. An additional 50 points will be awarded to participants who begin and complete five vertical miles (40 laps) in the Vertical Mile Challenge at Rocky Face Park in 2018.
The 2017 awards will be presented at RockyFest on April 21. Learn more about the points challenge, view the leaderboard, or even submit your results at www.alexandercountync.gov/events. You can also learn more at www.facebook.com/AlexanderCoRunning.
