One year ago today the sanctuary of the Bethlehem Baptist Church was destroyed by fire. It was Saturday, July 18th 2015 around 3pm. A series of lightning strikes struck the steeple of the historic church on Highway 127. The building was engulfed in flames in minutes. Despite the work of over 100 firefighters the structure was gone in a very short period of time. Alexander County Fire Marshall Russel Greene said after the fire that there was no way to save the structure. He commented that day “We could have had the firetrucks in the parking lot of the church with the hoses ready and could not have saved the church”
A massive demolition and clean up followed. The Church has been holding services at Bethlehem Elementary School and now the plans are set for construction of a new sanctuary.
Here is a rendering the planned new structure.
