No. 17 NC State baseball came through in a must-win situation Monday afternoon at Doak Field at Dail Park, dropping No. 15 Coastal Carolina 8-1 to force a championship game in the Raleigh Regional Monday night at 6 PM.
The Wolfpack (38-21) took a 1-0 lead in the third, then roared to a 7-0 lead with a six-run rally jumpstarted by a two-run shot to left from Brock Deatherage. NC State tacked on one more in the sixth before Coastal Carolina (46-16) set the final 8-1 with its lone run in the seventh.
Deatherage finished 1-for-5 with a run and two RBIs on his sixth homer of the year. Evan Mendoza led the way with a 3-for-5 showing including three RBIs, a double, and a run. Preston Palmeiro supplied a 3-for-5 performance with two RBIs.
Stephen Pitarra walked once, drove in one, and scored once. Joe Dunand scored once in a 1-for-5 outing. Brett Kinneman went 1-for-3 with a run. Chance Shepard scored twice on two walks. Josh McLain scored once on a walk.
Wolfpack starter Ryan Williamson left in the second after shutting out the Chanticleers in the first, allowing three hits. Will Gilbert (5-1) scored the win, entering in the second and going the distance, a career-long eight innings, with a career-high nine punchouts. Gilbert allowed one earned on five hits and a walk over 108 pitches.
NC State returns to action at 6 PM for the regional championship game.
