The couple found unconscious in a vehicle parked last week in Statesville with a small child in the back seat are also accused of stealing jewelry.
The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office charged Melissa Marie Smyles, 22, with felony larceny, according to a press release. Her 20-year-old boyfriend, Cody Lynn Hairyes, was charged with obtaining property by false pretense.
Deputies say Smyles stole $5,550 in property on Aug. 7 from a home in the 400 block of Wildlife Road in Mooresville. The items included rings, a coin collection and cash.
Investigators found some of the stolen property in Smyle’s home in Troutman. They also discovered that Hairyes had sold three rings to a pawnshop in Troutman.
Smyles was given an additional $25,000 secured bond and Hairyes was issued a new $9,999 secured bond.
About $2,200 of property was recovered and returned to the victims.
Statesville Police officers found the two passed out inside a car on Aug. 10 in the parking lot of a Family Dollar Store on Shelton Avenue. Officers found heroin and drug paraphernalia in the car.
Hairyes, of Stony Point was charged with possession of heroin and misdemeanor child abuse. Smyles was charged with possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia, and misdemeanor child abuse.
The child was turned over to a family member.
