Mrs. Monica Mitchell, Ellendale Elementary School Teacher, was recognized by the Alexander County Board of Education as the 2016-2017 Mathematics Teacher of the Year for Alexander County
Mrs. Mitchell has taught in Alexander County for 24 years, all at Ellendale Elementary School. She is a graduate of Appalachian State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. She was selected as Ellendale’s Teacher of the Year in 2003 and 2013.
Each year, school principals in North Carolina schools are encouraged to nominate the teacher they believe does the most effective job teaching mathematics in their school. From those nominated, each LEA selects one teacher to represent the best in mathematics teaching from the entire system.
She is married to Scott Mitchell, and the couple has two children. Their oldest son, Landon Mitchell is a sophomore at UNC-Greensboro, and Grant Mitchell is a senior at Alexander Central.
