Jeffery Lee Owenby, 44, was in the intake area of the Wilkes Jail being processed for incarceration when he walked out of the facility without being detected.
The escape is said to have resulted from human error and an internal investigation is underway to help determine the appropriate action to take as a result of the incident.
Owenby, from Buncombe County was being placed in jail on three counts of felony probation violation, one felony count of obtaining property by false pretense and two misdemeanor counts of larceny when he escaped.
A stolen pickup was recovered when officers with the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office apprehended Owenby about 7:10 a.m. Monday on Wilkesboro Boulevard in Lenoir. The pickup had been stolen in Wilkes County
Owenby was the first person to escape from the new Wilkes County Jail. It opened in Wilkesboro in 2014.
