We continue to follow the death of an inmate last week at the Alexander County Correctional Institute. Last Thursday morning an inmate died at the local prison but so far the North Carolina Department of Corrections is not commenting on the death. Repeated calls to the the public information office in Raleigh have not been returned. We spoke with the administrator at the prison Susan Wike. She would not comment on the death and referred us to the State Office. This follows an assault on a corrections officer on July 8th. An inmate attacked an officer with a homemade weapon. The Officer was treated and released and the prison was placed on “modified lockdown” for about a week. Wike, in a conversation Friday did confirm that the local prison has returned to normal status following the attack.
