The beat goes on. Some rumbling during the regular season that Alexander Central’s Softball “Magic” was over, looks to be a bit premature. The Lady Cougars won the North Piedmont Conference Tournament Title Thursday beating Lake Norman 11-0 in 5 innings.
Alexander Central owns 9 State Softball titles and the longest winning streak in state history at 95 but Coach Darrell Adkins knew he was in his own words “replacing a legend” when he took the job after Monte Sherrill left to coach at Pfeiffer University. Over the course of the season the Lady Cougars lost 4 games. 4 is a lot for the states most storied softball program. They shared the regular season title with West Iredell with a record of 12-2. The Lady Cougars look to be peaking at the right time.
In the Thursday Championship game played in a drizzle at Taylorsville’s Central Park, Alexander Central left no doubt they’re still going to be a factor when the State Playofs begin next week. Chesney Millsaps pitched a 3 hit shutout and Taylor Payne homered twice. Payne has 11 home runs on the season which is a new single season school record. ACHS with a record of 23-4 await the pairings for the State 4A Playoffs. Just a warning to those who underestimated this years Cougar Team, they are starting to look like the teams in years past and that means the season is just getting started.
