An inmate at the Alexander County Detention Center attempted to hang himself last Friday. According to Sheriff Chris Bowman the inmate who has not been identified was in jail for violating a Domestic Violence Protection Order. Early Friday afternoon the inmate was found hanging by the neck with a bed sheet tied to an upper bunk. A Detention Officer had checked the inmate 12 to 15 minutes prior to the incident’s discovery. Bowman said the inmate was rushed to an area hospital where he remains in critical condition.
Sheriff Bowman said Monday that Detention Center procedure is for inmates to be observed by Facility Personnel at least twice per hour. The procedure was followed according to the Sheriff.
