Emergency evacuations are ongoing as 55 homes are threatened by a rapidly spreading wildfire that started in the Sampson area of Watauga County Monday night.
Firefighters and emergency response personnel from eight fire departments are actively fighting the fire which was first reported around7 p.m. Monday, near the intersection of Sampson Road and Penley Road.
Multiple fire crews responded to the fire and have been battling it overnight. As of 7 a.m. this morning, the fire size was approximately 400 acres with zero containment, according to the Watauga County Fire Marshal’s Office.
Alexander County Fire Marshall Russell Greene confirms that a unit from both the Taylorsville and Ellendale Fire Departments are in Watauga County. A truck with two men from each department will assist today.
