The 2016 Apple Bowl turned out to be a game of missed opportunities and defense. East and West Middle Schools battled to a scoreless tie at half but both teams made it to the red zone to be turned away.
East jumped on top with 38 seconds left in the 3rd quarter when Dayenete Calhoun streaked 78 yards for a score putting the Falcons on top 6-0.
West struggled on offense in the second half as the East defense took control of the game. Falcon 7th grader Russell Frasier scored on a 10 yard interception return with 1:34 remaining in the contest and East took home the prestigious Apple Bowl Trophy for the 1st time in 3 years.
After a 0-2 start to the season East finishes 4-2 including 4-1 in conference play. West, with the loss fell to 5-2.
The game each year decides Middle School Football supremacy in Alexander County and has turned into one the great events on each year’s calender.
