A man from Alexander County and a woman face drug charges after being found unconscious in a car with a 2-year-old child in the back seat, according to Statessville Police. Cody Lynn Hairyes, 20, and Melissa Marie Smyles, 22, were both charged Thursday, according to a press release. The car was parked at Dollar General on Shelton Avenue. Investigators say they found heroin and drug paraphernalia after they woke up the couple.
Hairyes, of Stony Point, was charged with possession of heroin and misdemeanor child abuse. He was issued a $25,000 secured bond.
Smyles, of Troutman, was charged with possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia, and misdemeanor child abuse. She was also served an outstanding warrant for felony larceny and given a $25,000 secured bond.
The child was turned over to a family member.
